About The College Library
Guru Nanak College Library, Dhanbad, is an academic library established to support the teaching, learning, and research needs of the college community. The college was established in 1970, and the library has since played an important role in providing access to academic resources and supporting the overall educational objectives of the institution.
Collection And Resources
The library has a rich and diverse collection of more than 19,800 print books, covering a wide range of subjects offered by the college. The collection encompasses literature in Hindi, English, Bengali, Urdu, and Punjabi, along with major academic disciplines such as Commerce, History, Psychology, Political Science, Economics, and other subjects like BBA and BCA.
In addition to textbooks and general reading materials, the library maintains reference books, journals, periodicals, newspapers, competitive examination resources, and other academic materials to meet the varied information requirements of students, faculty members, researchers, and other users.
The library also facilitates access to a substantial range of electronic information resources and online learning materials, enabling users to supplement their print-based learning with digital resources.
Library Automation And Technology
The library has adopted KOHA, an open-source Integrated Library Management System (ILMS), for managing its day-to-day library operations. The system supports various activities, including acquisition, cataloguing, classification, circulation, member management, and report generation.
The library follows standard library practices for bibliographic organization and resource management. Books are classified according to the Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) summary system and are barcoded for efficient circulation and inventory management. Bibliographic records are maintained using established standards, including MARC 21, wherever applicable.
The library provides OPAC facilities to assist users in locating resources available in the collection. Internet and LAN facilities are also available to support access to online information resources.
Continuous Development
The library continuously reviews and upgrades its collection and facilities in accordance with the changing academic requirements of the institution. New and latest titles are added regularly in the subjects taught at the college, along with reference materials and other resources required by students and faculty members.
The library also seeks to incorporate emerging technologies and contemporary library practices to improve accessibility, efficiency, and user experience.
Management And Administration
The overall functioning and administration of the library are carried out under the supervision of a qualified Librarian, with the support of dedicated library staff. The library works in coordination with the college administration, faculty members, and other stakeholders to identify resource requirements and strengthen library services.
